Because love is as hard as a walnut in a toothless mouth,<\/p>

Because you might stand for hours, as your breathy gasps burn in the frost, waiting for a rose to whisper to you,<\/p>

While you forget that time ignores women who labor neglected in kitchens,<\/p>

And men withering in coffeehouses.<\/p>

All that you earn to is to steal a single rosy pulse for your heart,<\/p>

No chocolate bars will suffice to cheer you up,<\/p>

No cartons of ice cream, and<\/p>

Not even hours of seated mediation in yoga studios.<\/p>

You write your son: \u201cI\u2019m alarmed I\u2019ll slap my exile, fearing that my hand will get sullied by separation.\u201d<\/p>

He shares your comment with his friend, and they both guffaw!<\/p>

\u201cI feel parched!\u201d<\/p>

You repeat this almost every day within earshot of your daughter, before she slams the door and leaves.<\/p>

\u201cSorrow chokes me.\u201d<\/p>

I write down this phrase and quickly erase it, fearing that the world\u2019s serenity will be perturbed.<\/p>

For me to love you<\/p>

Is as impossible as for you to be here now,<\/p>

While I\u2019m alone and repeat<\/p>

In my bedroom,<\/p>

In the kitchen,<\/p>

While climbing the stairs,<\/p>

At the door, and<\/p>

On the couch,<\/p>

In front of the TV,<\/p>

That I\u2019m turning into a wall so dilapidated that mirrors dread it.<\/p>

Death will never die; I\u2019m the one who always does.<\/p>

My blood boils.<\/p>

My fingers are live embers.\u00a0<\/p>

I have no whispering bed,<\/p>

No gently undulating swimming pool.<\/p>

Instead, I\u2019m surrounded by snow drifts and memories of reverberating bombs,<\/p>

And, when I sleep, my eyelids cling together over a dark void.<\/p>

You loving one of them,<\/p>

Means you must ditch your wristwatch, so it doesn\u2019t make you feel that time is evaporating<\/p>

Or remind you that he is slow to respond.<\/p>

You will need to dispose of your phone, so it won\u2019t upset you with its silent howl.<\/p>

I really wish we had never met<\/p>

And I had remained just as I was:<\/p>

Oblivious to everything happening around me,<\/p>

Needing only a piece of paper<\/p>

A young man, who is only fifty,<\/p>

Whenever the pounding of his heart reaches the hem of my dress, I swallow an aspirin<\/p>

And tell him to bring me a tree.<\/p>

He\u2019s gone till the forest is stripped of verdure.<\/p>

Totally disinterested in arithmetic,<\/p>

He counts only the moments we will spend together, one day,<\/p>

When we won\u2019t be separated as we once were, when<\/p>

Clandestine meetings made us prick up our ears.<\/p>

I dream of him every day,<\/p>

But rarely find a spot for myself in the folds of his consideration of some other girl.<\/p>

I write to him:<\/p>

\u201cMy window, which looks down on you, has grown weary,<\/p>

Because the branch tips grow no closer<\/p>

So, it won\u2019t dissolve, the way it did two months ago<\/p>
