Book, My friend !<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dear Book !<\/p>\n

You are my friend since childhood<\/p>\n

Even before I could speak<\/p>\n

My Grandma was telling fairy tales from your pages<\/p>\n

She told us stories of great epics like Mahabharat and Ramayan<\/p>\n

Since then I fell in love with you and you became my constant\u00a0 companion.<\/p>\n

I have seen you in different forms and colours<\/p>\n

Many books full with pictures in glossy pages<\/p>\n

Some are voluminous filled with small letters<\/p>\n

carrying wisdom of sages<\/p>\n

Story books ,textbooks ,novels ,algebra or trigonometry<\/p>\n

I have relished my reading pleasures in your company.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I have lost count how many books I have read<\/p>\n

Nor do I have remembered their names<\/p>\n

But I can recall some of them which interested me too high<\/p>\n

Treasure Island ,Gulliver Travels,Tom Sawyer ,<\/p>\n

Uncle Tom’s Cabin,Mayor of Casterbridge and Robinon Crusoe\u00a0<\/p>\n

Short stories by Rabindranath Tagore,novels by Sarat Chandra and Ashapurna Devi<\/p>\n

Books by Manoj Das ,Bibhuti Pattnaik ,Prativa Ray and Kanhu Charan were my favourites.<\/p>\n

Be it a short story ,novel , poetry\u00a0 or a detective series<\/p>\n

I was always engrossed in reading<\/p>\n

Sometimes I forget to sleep if the book is thrilling<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Books fire my imagination\u00a0 and take me to the wonderland in a joy ride<\/p>\n

From the pages of books speaks Mahatma Gandhi,Dostoevsky\u00a0 and Maxim Gorky<\/p>\n

I can interact with their thoughts and understand what these great people are saying<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

If I am\u00a0 asked, “What books have given to us ?”<\/p>\n

I will say,’All ‘<\/p>\n

\u00a0what I am today ,what my children are today<\/p>\n

Because of the knowledge stored in books.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Books inspire us through stories and sayings of noble people.<\/p>\n

Books connect people to people<\/p>\n

In a nutshell ,had there been no books<\/p>\n

There would have been no civilization.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Log<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I have\u00a0 once been ,a part of a big banyan tree<\/p>\n

Full with thousands of green leaves<\/p>\n

The leaves sway their little heads<\/p>\n

When sweet breeze play with them<\/p>\n

Their murmuring sound was like a soothing song<\/p>\n

As if they are in prayer for the Lord .<\/p>\n

Beautiful birds and squirrels built<\/p>\n

their houses in\u00a0 my\u00a0 hollow trunks .<\/p>\n

Their noise and tweets<\/p>\n

Were filling the atmosphere with lovely sounds.<\/p>\n

Some monkeys used to jump from branches to branches<\/p>\n

Carrying their babies with joyful abundance.<\/p>\n

When sun shines hot overhead<\/p>\n

I see tired travelers seek shelter under my shade.<\/p>\n

Not only men ,but cattle and other creatures gather around me<\/p>\n

And I feel as if I am a part of their family.<\/p>\n

Some take afternoon nap under my canopy<\/p>\n

While village children play like swings<\/p>\n

Holding the roots hanging from my branches.<\/p>\n

My history goes to hundred years back<\/p>\n

I have seen\u00a0\u00a0 when village brides<\/p>\n

Were bade farewell in ‘Sabaris ‘<\/p>\n

The carriers of Sabaris and Palinkis<\/p>\n

Walk in matching steps<\/p>\n

singing in chorus<\/p>\n

some beautiful song<\/p>\n

The bride,bridegroom and marriage party<\/p>\n

Used to halt near me<\/p>\n

To offer prayers to Grama Devati<\/p>\n

I have seen silent tears\u00a0 flowing<\/p>\n

from the eyes of the new bride.<\/p>\n

I have seen the village turning into a town<\/p>\n

When thatched houses were replaced<\/p>\n

By houses made of bricks and cement<\/p>\n

I did not know that<\/p>\n

A\u00a0 great danger for me was lurking around<\/p>\n

As one day,some labourers from nearby town<\/p>\n

Came with their axes and saw<\/p>\n

They cut me down mercilessly<\/p>\n

And I heard them talking<\/p>\n

That there would come\u00a0 up a big industry<\/p>\n

The area has to be cleared<\/p>\n

To make wide roads and a planned town.<\/p>\n

Nobody was hearing my cries<\/p>\n

When\u00a0 axes were cutting my branches<\/p>\n

My white blood oozing from wounds<\/p>\n

My limbs were falling one by one.<\/p>\n

Lastly they uprooted me from the hard earth<\/p>\n

Which was holding me tight<\/p>\n

Not letting me go from her embrace.<\/p>\n

Alas ! All in vain !<\/p>\n

They threw me on the way side<\/p>\n

My green leaves ,branches and roots are scattered here and there<\/p>\n

Oh! The sun is now burning us<\/p>\n

And I am waiting to die ,cell by cell.<\/p>\n
