However, this answer is incorrect. Since the end of World War II, America’s most lethal and destructive weapon has actually been the US Dollar.

Just like in old folk tales where a demon’s life force was trapped inside a parrot, it can be said that America’s life force resides in this “parrot” called the Dollar.

The dollar, which has enjoyed absolute dominance in the world since 1944, is now facing grim predictions. Peter Schiff—an American businessman, investor, author, financial commentator, economic forecaster, and radio host—has stated that the dollar is going to sink very soon, subjecting America to its worst economic depression to date. Schiff is a staunch free-market advocate and a proponent of the Austrian School of Economics, a legacy passed down to him by his father, Irwin Schiff.

Prior to this, Peter Schiff had accurately predicted the 2008 financial crisis (much like Raghuram Rajan did), a forecast that proved to be true. A similar sentiment was voiced by Helmut Reisen, Head of Research at the OECD, on April 2, 2009, during the G20 London Summit:

“Just as the British Pound was replaced by the Dollar in the last century, the Dollar will now be replaced by China’s currency, the Yuan.”

He noted that the conditions developing today mirror those present when the US Dollar dethroned the Pound. Britain lost its status as the world’s largest economy in 1872. Similarly, in 1915, it lost its position as the world’s largest exporter. Britain, once a global creditor nation, turned into a debtor nation after 1914, while the United States stepped in to become the world’s primary creditor. Today, China has become the creditor, and the US has become the world’s largest debtor. This is why it is projected that by 2050, China’s currency will become the world’s primary reserve currency.

How the Dollar Became the World’s Reserve Currency

Before examining how the dollar might collapse, let us discuss how it became the reserve currency in the first place and what factors drove its global power.

In the midst of World War II, the US and Britain sought to replace the old colonial system with a new world order. The responsibility for drafting this plan was given to British economist John Maynard Keynes and American economist Harry Dexter White.

The underlying objectives of this new order remained largely aligned with the old one: how to re-establish control over the resources, economic policies, and politics of newly liberated colonies. Its immediate goals were twofold:

Establish a financial assistance mechanism to rebuild Europe after the devastation of WWII.

Introduce a new currency to replace gold in international trade.

To execute this short- and long-term blueprint, a conference was organized from July 1 to July 22, 1944, at the Mount Washington Hotel in the town of Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA. It was attended by 730 delegates from 44 nations.

At this conference, the United States proposed making the US Dollar the primary exchange currency for international trade in place of gold, granting it a status equal to gold. The US pledged that whenever any foreign government presented $35 to the US government, it would be given one ounce of gold in return. This proposal was passed, and from that point on, the dollar effectively replaced gold. This became known as the Bretton Woods System.

From 1944 until March 1973, the US Dollar remained the global trade currency operating under a fixed exchange rate system.

Additionally, two major institutions were established at the conference to fund Europe’s post-war reconstruction:

The World Bank Group

The International Monetary Fund (IMF)

Until 1969, the dollar remained the primary currency disbursed in IMF loans. However, in 1969, the IMF created a new reserve asset called the SDR (Special Drawing Rights). The SDR represents a basket of major currencies weighted by percentages. Initially, the basket comprised four currencies: the US Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, and British Pound.

The IMF reviews the composition of this basket every five years. In its review meeting on November 30, 2015, it decided to include the Chinese Yuan in the basket starting October 1, 2016. Today, an SDR consists of:

41.73% US Dollar

30.93% Euro

10.92% Chinese Yuan

9.09% British Pound

8.33% Japanese Yen

Announcing the inclusion of China’s currency in the SDR basket, Christine Lagarde, then Managing Director of the IMF, remarked:

“The expansion of the SDR basket to include the Yuan is a historic milestone for the Fund… It is a milestone because it reflects the broader shift occurring in the global economy, showing that the Fund is ready to adapt to changing times.”

The “Nixon Shock” and Dollar Hegemony

The inclusion of China’s currency in global trade reserves signals that the dollar is facing a crisis. A similar crisis occurred earlier during the Vietnam War.

In 1965, the US invasion of Vietnam and its subsequent entanglement in the war placed immense strain on the American economy. Consequently, on August 15, 1971, US President Richard Nixon unilaterally declared that the US would no longer redeem dollars for gold. This event came to be known as the “Nixon Shock.”

Although the dollar was no longer backed by gold, over those 25 years, it had solidly entrenched itself as the global reserve currency.

What is a Reserve Currency? It is a currency widely recognized for international trade settlements, which central banks around the world hoard as part of their foreign exchange reserves.

This global status provided enormous advantages to the United States. While other nations had to produce real goods or offer tangible services to earn dollars for foreign trade, the US needed only paper and printing ink to acquire goods from around the world.

Even today, the dollar maintains significant global weight:

It is involved in roughly 88% of daily foreign exchange transactions worldwide.

It accounts for approximately 64% of foreign currency reserves held by global central banks.

Here is the complete English translation of the provided text:

The Decline of the Dollar and Its Global Impact

The very US Dollar that has maintained America’s economic dominance across the globe is now facing predictions of collapse from economist Peter Schiff. He identifies America’s excessive indebtedness as the primary trigger for this downfall.

As of May 2026, the US owes:

$1.14 trillion to Japan

$948.6 billion to the United Kingdom

$659.3 billion to China

While these nations stand as its largest foreign creditors, the United States owes money to numerous other countries as well. According to the U.S. National Debt Clock, which ticks continuously, America’s total national and external debt has crossed $39 trillion in May 2026. This translates to a debt burden of $115,188 for every American citizen.

The Rise of Alternative Currencies and Currency Swaps

A ballooning debt burden directly undermines a currency’s standing in the international market. As the dollar’s reliability wanes, nations are naturally seeking stronger, more dependable alternatives to conduct international trade—a shift that is already well underway.

Today, China’s currency is increasingly viewed as a stable and reliable trade vehicle. By 2026, China has entered into bilateral currency swap agreements with 40 countries. Under these arrangements, participating nations trade directly in their own domestic currencies, bypassing the need for third-party clearing currencies.

A Key Shift Left Out of Mainstream News:

Japan and China have agreed to settle bilateral trade directly using their respective national currencies instead of relying on the US Dollar.

Similar agreements and shifts are expanding rapidly:

BRICS Nations: Member countries have agreed to promote local currency trade settlements.

Russia & China: A robust bilateral local-currency trading mechanism is already active.

African Nations: A growing number of countries across Africa are preparing for similar local currency trade frameworks.

Global Central Banks: China has established currency swap lines with central banks across Europe, Asia, and Latin America—including the European Union, the UK, Switzerland, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Argentina, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

De-Dollarization Trends in Global Commodities

India-Iran Trade: India previously utilized gold as a settlement medium instead of the US Dollar to import oil from Iran.

Global Reserve Discussions: Both the United Nations and the IMF have been examining the need for a non-sovereign global reserve asset. The IMF has previously explored concepts like Bancor as an alternative reserve structure.

The “Petroyuan”: The Chinese Yuan has gained notable traction in crude oil settlement, with nations like the UAE adopting it for regional commercial transactions.

Geopolitics and the Burden on Tied Economies

The global push away from the dollar also reflects deepening geopolitical friction against American foreign policy. Sweeping economic sanctions imposed by the US on nations like Russia and Iran have compelled affected countries to actively bypass the dollar, incentivizing trade structures that dilute US monetary leverage.

Ultimately, the dollar is moving down a path of structural decline, and for a debt-laden United States, its unraveling poses severe economic challenges.

India has been using gold instead of the dollar to purchase oil from Iran. The United Nations and the IMF are searching for a new reserve currency. The IMF has even suggested an alternative reserve currency called the Bancor. The Yuan has already become a popular currency in the oil trade, and the United Arab Emirates is using the Yuan in mutual trade. John Hardy, Head of FX Strategy at Saxo Bank, states that the American currency is constantly moving toward stagnation and there is a need to replace it.

Nations attempting to break free from the dollar also reflects a growing resentment toward American leadership. Economic sanctions imposed by the US on Russia and Iran have forced both nations to discourage the use of the dollar in bilateral trade to weaken American influence. Overall, the dollar is heading rapidly toward decline, and its collapse would be like a sinking ship for a debt-ridden America.

The Indian government has tied the boat of its economy to this very ship that is about to sink. When the ship goes down, it is not difficult to imagine what will happen to the boat tied to it. Proof of this today can be seen in the tariffs imposed by America, under whose pressure India has lost its capacity for independent decision-making.

By Musharraf
